Kitchen Sink Studios presents "The Tallest Mural in Arizona," a documentary film on the creation of a new mural in central Phoenix by Berlin-based JBAK.

Love. Art. Family. Rebirth. All of them converge in one place in central Phoenix as James Bullough and Addison Karl, the American-born and Berlin-based graffiti artist duo known as JBAK, create a stunning piece of public art as part of the revitalization of a high-rise office building into a creative hub. Chris Nieto, who commissioned an Addison Karl mural on his downtown Phoenix building a year prior, was enlisted by JBAK to find a building owner willing to commission another work. Nieto connected with building owners and developers Tim O’Neil and Bob Karber, whom recently purchased an office high-rise on a very busy intersection in Downtown Phoenix. O’Neil and Karber saw this as a rare opportunity to commission a very special piece of public art and jumped on the opportunity to commission the artists to paint a mural.

Here's how Nieto summarized the story of how the film came together:

The story begins one year ago in the spring of 2012. American Born, Berlin-based artist Addison Karl, member of the internationally renowned muralist duo called JBAK, returned to Phoenix to visit family, and above all, work. Prior to his arrival Addison contacted anyone he could to identify a willing building owner and customer to allow him to paint his Phoenix mural. As per usual, Karl didn’t want just any wall, he wanted to do something bold, something big, he wanted to paint a landmark mural in his hometown Phoenix.

Through word of mouth Karl was paired with local building owner Chris Nieto, who, fully aware of Karl’s talent, excitedly gave him a wall on his downtown Phoenix hotspot and commissioned the work.

Nieto and Karl became fast friends; the mural, entirely out of spray-paint, was completed after a week of Karl frantically working to cover his 25 foot by 50 foot canvas. The end result, the Francesca D. mural was added to the fabric of the city’s core, on a heavily trafficked building less than 150 feet from the Phoenix Art Museum.

Prior to leaving the states to return to his home in Berlin, Karl painted two other murals, one in Los Angeles and the other in Chicago.

Over the course of a year Nieto and Karl wrote each other and planned for another project in Phoenix as part of a JBAK tour. JBAK: James Bullough and Addison Karl had never worked in Phoenix together which was very exciting to them all.

In preparation for JBAK’s planned arrival to Phoenix, Nieto contacted anyone he could to identify a high-profile building and location whose owner would finance the work. As time drew near, and with no commitments from the various building owners Nieto identified, James Bullough, reluctantly decided to remain in Berlin and miss the tour as no financing was in place to pay for his travels.

Two days prior to the scheduled leave date, Nieto connected with building owners and Tim O’Neil and Bob Karber, whom recently purchased an office high-rise on a very busy intersection in Downtown Phoenix. O’Neil and Karber, who saw this as a rare opportunity to commission a very special piece of public art, agreed to pay for James to fly to Phoenix, and commissioned JBAK to paint a wall on their building, giving them a 60 foot tall canvas on one of the busiest intersections in central Phoenix.
Realizing the gravity of this potentially significant event with JBAK coming to visit and the now commission in place, Nick Hower and Kory Kapfer, owners of Kitchen Sink Studios, agreed to document the project and contribute his company’s resources to film a documentary. Nieto and Karl’s grandmother, both Phoenicians, were selected by JBAK and the building owners as subjects for the mural to capture two different generations of people from Phoenix.

And over the past few months, they entrusted Kitchen Sink Studios to create a full leasing and marketing package for their properties in Tucson and College Station, Texas that included...just about everything but the kitchen sink.

We started each project with architectural plans for the 15-story buildings. And that's it. Kitchen Sink was charged with helping to name the properties, creation of brand identity, development of computer animations, production of illustrative marketing videos, design of print collateral and development of mobile-friendly web sites for each of the two under-construction projects.

First came the names, and we took into consideration the fact that the University of Arizona and Texas A&M environments are VERY different. For Tucson, the name had to reflect sort of an urban-aspirational feel to attract the kind of students who would want to live in the finest student housing in the area. And for College Station, we had to weigh a similar demographic while taking into consideration the "Texas" feel of College Station and the property's location in the town's Northgate district.

For Tucson, the name "Level" was selected, and for College Station, the project was named "Rise at Northgate." The brand identities soon followed.

At Kitchen Sink Studios, we love working with clients who are pushing the envelope and setting the standard in their industries. Over the past few months, we've had the privilege of working with Upward Projects, the parent company behind several exceptional restaurants in the Valley — Postino, Winsdor, Churn and most recently Federal Pizza.

The Kitchen Sink team is working with Upward Projects on several fronts, but the first one to go public is the new web presence for Federal Pizza, their recently opened new concept in north central Phoenix. Federal Pizza is housed in a stunningly restored former bank building, and has already taken its place as one of the Valley's most exciting — and delicious — new restaurants.

A restaurant this great deserves a web presence that's just as strong. So based on the brand identity work done by local agency Switch, the Kitchen Sink team the Kitchen Sink team developed a new site featuring beautifully styled photography and extensive use of web fonts to preserve the look and feel of the Federal Pizza brand. The site also features fully responsive coding that creates a striking — but very user-friendly — interface for mobile devices.

"During the design process we decided that the photography and typography should be a focal point of the site," said Dan Freeman, Kitchen Sink's Director of Web Development. "Using a percentage-based architecture and responsive images we were able to keep the same look no matter what device you are using. The site looks amazing on a computer as well as tablets, large Android phones and scales down beautifully on smaller screens like the iPhone 4S. All of this is accomplished without loading extra images to keep the site snappy despite slow connections. Even the menu and navigation respond dynamically to the device size to give the user a great experience however they choose to view the site."

Our team spent a full day (and night) carefully lighting and art directing a shoot shortly after Federal Pizza opened to capture the ambiance and dining experience. The Upward Projects team has a unique and exceptional sense of style when it comes to how they present their restaurants and brands, and our challenge was to capture it in a way that would bring Federal Pizza to life on screens big and small.
One of our favorite features of the web site is the menu. While most restaurants simply upload a PDF file of their hard-copy menu, the Federal Pizza team wanted something more. So we coded the menu in HTML5 and with responsive coding to present their delicious fare in a memorable way. The menu is also coded with a content management system that allows the Federal Pizza team to make day-to-day changes and automatically have the formatting preserved.

We look forward to rolling out even more killer work for the Upward Projects team in the coming months — it's been a great client relationship so far, and we're looking forward to seeing where it goes in the future!Tom Evanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14389124006037510938noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-606223937810029143.post-66527561289733791182013-01-30T15:07:00.002-08:002013-01-31T08:42:07.196-08:00"Coconino," A Film By Kitchen Sink Studios

"Coconino" is a short film by Kitchen Sink Studios. This film represents one man's exploration into his beloved craft. He travels from location to location in search of more than just fish — he is searching for an experience.

We wanted to create a project where we could flex our muscles when it comes to creating exceptional film projects, while documenting the passion that many of us in the studio share for the outdoors. "Coconino" features some of the killer new equipment and editing techniques we've brought in-house in the past few months, combined with some of the most beautiful settings in our home state of Arizona. It's our own little love letter to both our work and to nature.

The project was filmed with our RED Camera and a a Go Pro camera by Kitchen Sink's Brandon Barnard, Director of Video Production, along with Justin Zellars and Tim Stansell. Creative Director Doug Bell was the "star" of the film.

"I enjoyed the hunt," Barnard said. "When four guys come together with like minded expectations and goals, they forget about 'how hard the hikes are' or 'how tired they have become after shooting for 16 hours' and begin to come together as a team or collective.

"I learned that no matter how much effort, time, money and motivation is involved, it is damn tough to catch a fish."

A highlight — Justin's contribution was some of the best shots in the video, through the use of the Go Pro and a track. But it didn't always go smoothly. At least now we know that Doug Bell's face — as well as the Go Pro — can withstand some impact with each other.

It wasn't all fun and games. The Kitchen Sink team wanted to create something that truly showcases our ability on film, skill that can translate into such areas as documentary filmmaking, ecotourism, travel films and just generally creating captivating products for small and large screen.

We hope you enjoy it!
And in the case of BestIT, they decided to use their sense of humor to create a unique message for their potential customers.

BestIT provides a variety of information technology solutions designed to reduce their clients' dependence on an internal IT department and help find the exact fit for their technology needs. But IT can be a pretty dry, jargon-filled field, and BestIT wanted to move away from that kind of messaging.

So, they hired Phoenix-based Randy Murray Productions to help them create short, humorous video vignettes to illustrate their competitive advantages and how they can help their clients. And they brought in the Kitchen Sink Studios team to build a web site around the videos and help them craft similarly clever messaging for the web and print collateral.

The videos feature "Seth," the average IT guy at the average company, as he bumbles thoughtlessly through his day while his company is tied in knots by IT problems. And it illustrates for potential clients that there's a solution that's better than "Seth" — and BestIT will help them find it.

The result is up and running at www.BestIT.com, and is fully coded to respond and display on mobile devices as well.

Every now and then we truly get to live up to our name and include everything but the kitchen sink in a project. And those projects are often the most rewarding.

We had a chance to do just that with WORKSBUREAU, a Phoenix-based architectural firm. WORKSBUREAU is the successor to the renowned will bruder+PARTNERS after Bruder and the other partners in the firm — Ben Nesbitt, Richard Jensen and Rob Gaspard — agreed to an amicable split.

Nesbitt, Jensen and Gaspard retained most of the staff and clients of the firm, and wanted to create a new brand identity that would stand out in an extraordinarily creative industry while reintroducing it to prospective clients around the world. So they called on Kitchen Sink Studios to help them start from scratch — including a new name, brand identity, business system and web site, complimented by professional photography that would capture the character of the firm and its team.

Step 1, of course, was the name. And there were literally dozens of options on the table. The partners gravitated toward WORKSBUREAU in the end because it had a unique sound rolling off the tongue and provided an interesting way to tell the firm's story. This initial phase included professional photography, securing and developing a SPLASH page to be utilized while the rest of the project was being developed. Here's how that was translated online:

Eventually, the front page of their web site would simply feature the dictionary definitions of the two merged words, leaving the reader to make the connection while viewing the work:

works noun \ˈwərks\

1. things produced or accomplished by effort, exertion, or exercise of skill <this book="book" hands="hands" is="is" many="many" of="of" the="the" work="work">

2. things produced by the exercise of creative talent or expenditure of creative effort : artistic production <an a="a" by="by" earlywork="earlywork" major="major" writer="writer"></an></this>

bu·reau noun \ˈbyu̇r-(ˌ)ō, ˈbyər-\

1. writing desk; especially : one having drawers and a slant top

2. commercial agency that serves as an intermediary especially for exchanging information or coordinating activities

Next came the brand identity, which actually was developed relatively quickly and easily out of the naming process. The WORKSBUREAU team liked the look of the word in a sans serif font in all caps, combined with clean design that would later allow for a focus on their projects rather than the brand identity itself. And, the Kitchen Sink team developed a bright, cheerful and energetic color palette to accentuate the new brand.

"We wanted to do something that would give them a lot of flexibility, and be distinguished without taking away from where the real focus should be," said Doug Bell, Creative Director for Kitchen Sink Studios. "But we also wanted it to have a friendly feel, to reflect on what it's like to work with their team, so we went with some really bright spot colors to make the business system professional but fun."

With the new brand in place, the Kitchen Sink team then began work on developing the kind of web presence that would showcase the company's work in a truly interactive and compelling way. The site would be all about the work itself, with the story told through professional photography of both the WORKSBUREAU team and its exceptional projects.

The Kitchen Sink team developed a site that brings the company's work to life in front of the viewer's eyes and allows the viewer to explore the wide variety of projects WORKSBUREAU has completed around the world.

"Because of the complexity of the design, WORKSBUREAU.com is one of our most ambitious sites to date,"said Dan Freeman, Kitchen Sink Studios' Lead Web Developer. "We had to create a fully responsive site that was extremely image heavy. It also had to have a CMS backend that could easily be updated by the WORKSBUREAU team after launch. All of these elements together can bring load times to a crawl.

The site even allows the user to choose which of the accent colors they prefer for viewing the site — which is designed to be indicative of the level of detail and the quality of the experience of interacting with the company's works. And, it contains content-management features in several sections that allow the WORKSBUREAU team to make additions and changes to the site from any standard web browser.

"We developed a site architecture that would only feed the appropriate sized images for the user's screen size to keep the site fast even on slow mobile networks. This combination of CSS media queries and jQuery responsive images were all built on WordPress, which is something that is one-of-a-kind on the web today."
Three years ago, we decided to adorn our front gate with more than 8,000 bottlecaps to serve as the sign for the studio...and we decided to do it during the middle of the summer. It was hot, but the result was awesome and we had a great time doing it.

This past week, we took on another outdoor project, this one just down the street — and during what's been the hottest week of the year. The Kitchen Sink Studios team created a new mural on the north wall of the new location for Matt's Big Breakfast, downtown Phoenix's landmark diner.

The timing meant that, well, it was hot. But it was also very fun and rewarding. Take a look at the process photos to see how it all came together, and look for it in person when the new Matt's opens in the coming weeks!

How do you take a hip company with its own corporate identity and 12 separate and individual brands, rebrand the parent company in a compelling way without detracting from the other brands, and create a web site that puts them all together in one place — and is completely mobile-friendly?

That was the challenge the Kitchen Sink Studios team was given by Fox Restaurant Concepts, which hired us to redo the company's brand identity and create a new corporate web site that showcases the 12 different restaurant concepts the company operates.

And it wasn't a rebrand of Corporation X. Fox Restaurant Concepts is known throughout the region as the creator of some of the most exceptional dining experiences around. Our mission was to convey their sense of quality, style and design not just for the corporate brand, but for each one of the individual restaurant concepts as well.

Step 1 was the brand, and we realized that we needed to create something visually compelling but that wouldn't detract from the other brands. It had to be complementary, strong on its own but not the focus of attention. We created a variety of different concepts, but owner Sam Fox gravitated toward cleaner looks with dark color palettes, and with the flexibility to be used in a variety of different settings. The look you see here is now being incorporated throughout the organization, and is a dramatic change from their previous brand identity, which had grown dated.

Now, the web site, which you can view here. The site needed to check the following boxes:

• Provide key information about the company.

• Spotlight each of the restaurant concepts, with a focus on their individual brands.

• Visually represent the experience of dining at each restaurant.

• Functionally provide all the information a customer may need, including hours, locations, reservation information and anything else.

• Provide a variety of other services, including group events, gift cards, promotions and events and feedback forms.

Oh, and it needed to work not only on desktop, but on tablets and mobile devices as well.

The solution was a responsive-coded site that adapts to the size of the viewer's screen, whether on a smart phone or a computer monitor. The site also includes a great deal of high-quality professional photography — the vast majority of which was taken by David Fox, Sam Fox's brother and a terrific photographer.

The site includes a full back-end content management system that allows almost all content on the site to be updated through WordPress with any web browser, making it easy for the Fox team to edit items that change on a regular basis, such as menus and hours. They can even easily add new locations, a critical feature for the fast-growing company.

It's the most complicated site our team has built in HTML5 (which we use exclusively these days; we did some pretty complex sites in Flash back in the day), and it was a great way for our web team to flex its muscles when it comes to building a site that works on the full spectrum of devices.

We're very pleased with the new look we created for Fox Restaurant Concepts. Now if you'll excuse us, working with all these great restaurants has made us hungry...
Tom Evanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14389124006037510938noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-606223937810029143.post-27986369875907808952012-07-18T10:06:00.001-07:002012-07-18T13:37:09.748-07:00Check out our newest toy: A RED Digital Still & Motion Camera

The Kitchen Sink Studios team has picked up a new toy. Well, it's actually much more than just a toy.

This is a RED Camera. If you know what a RED Camera is, you're probably going "Oh, cool, a RED Camera!" If you don't know what a RED Camera is, here's a brief description, and why it's going to be a huge addition for us in upcoming projects.

A RED Camera is a high-definition camera that allows us to record video footage at an incredible quality. Think of it this way: A really nice HD camera records video at 1920 pixels wide, which is about the equivalent of a high-resolution photo about six inches wide.

The RED Camera records video at 5,000 pixels wide — about the equivalent of a high-resolution photo that is 17 inches wide. So for the first time, you can essentially record high-quality video AND still shots at the same time.

Not only that, it records everything in a proprietary REDCODE raw video format that is also of higher quality than average HD footage, allowing for an incredible amount of quality and flexibility in the post-production process.

The camera also comes with all kinds of bells, whistles and attachments that make it extremely versatile, and those parts are interchangeable — so this one camera can perform the functions it might take several other cameras combined to perform.

The RED Camera is the same camera and technology being used to shoot films like The Great Gatsby, The Hobbit, The Amazing Spiderman and Pirates of the Caribbean as well as TV shows such as "Hatfields & McCoys," "Criminal Minds" and "Blue Bloods." It is also being used by photographers for everything from fashion to sports.

What will the Kitchen Sink team use it for? All kinds of stuff. We'll be better able to integrate high-definition live video into projects of all kinds, whether they are mixtures of video and photorealistic animation, the creation of virtual experiences and environments online, or just about anything else you can think of. We're taking it out into the field next week for our first major project with it, and we'll keep you posted on the results.
Our latest Featured Project is an animated re-enactment of an airplane-helicopter mid-air collision, created by our Kitchen Sink Legal, Inc. division for Patrick J. McGroder (Gallagher and Kennedy) to present at the American Bar Association Aviation Litigation Conference.

The presentation, which will take place on June 6, 2012, includes a two-minute computer animation showing the circumstances of a crash being used in Pat's opening statements at the conference. The video is shown on YouTube below; you may also view it on Vimeo.

Kitchen Sink Legal created this computer animation simulation based on data we received involving a mid-air collision over Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The Kitchen Sink Legal team handled everything in-house, from the creation of a foundation report, analyzing data, creatively portraying vantage points, showing radar data with speeds and altitude and coordinating voiceover prior to the collision.

Kitchen Sink Legal (www.kitchensinklegal.com) is proud to showcase its capabilities at this important conference, and appreciate Pat McGroder's ongoing trust in our services and expertise!

It combines our animation abilities with a versatile online slider to allow the viewer to interact with the images.

Using existing and proposed grading plans and planting guidelines provided by their architects (Hurdzan/Fry Environmental Golf Design), coupled with our computer model, plant material research and site photography, we were able to show exactly how the renovation of the golf course will look so that Town of Paradise Valley officials and neighbors understand the project. The image is presented in a web-based format that is compatible with multiple browsers and with iPads and iPhones.

The materials are to be used within the Paradise Valley Planning Board's application requesting an intermediate amendment to the Special Use Permit for the course. The renovations to the existing golf course will include modified grading and drainage, contouring, alternate tee box locations, restructuring of individual holes, new and reconfigured golf cart paths, new sand traps, new berms, modified water features, reconfigured water obstacles, and new landscaping and vegetation.
Miss First Friday this past weekend? Then you missed the incredible transformation of Kitchen Sink Studios' own Justin Zellars from being a swarthy long-hair to his new clean-shaven military-style look. Fortunately, we have the technology to allow you to experience the transformation yourself. Great work by Kitchen Sink's own Sarah Thomas in creating all the different do's you see here. And a shout out to Kory Kapfer for putting together the GIF file.Tom Evanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14389124006037510938noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-606223937810029143.post-33908468188738288582012-04-19T12:55:00.000-07:002012-05-15T08:33:55.292-07:00Making A Bike Rack, 101Inspired by my friend Dorina Bustamante, and in response to the inaugural Pedal Craft Event coming up this Friday, April 20th (www.pedalcraftphx.com), I decided to jump into things and design/ build a bike rack to celebrate the event. For those interested, here's how I did it:

Step #1
First, I sketched out a concept and generated a 3D model (thanks Mr. Kory Kapfer!). I understood I would need some intricate cutting of the metal and figured water-jetting the top plate would be the best bet.

Step #2
Next, I sent the electronic file (can be an Illustrator file, EPS, DXF, etc) to a company called Innovative Cutting Solutions (www.innovativecuttingsolutions.com or 623-842-1255) to cut-out the top bike design. Cost = $50

Step #3
I was able to talk Dave Terral at Saguaro Steel Industries, LLC (www.saguarosteel.com) into giving me some scrap tube steel and then he made some tack welds for the bike plate and help cut all the pieces.

Step #4
Edge Industries (www.edge-industries.com) hosted a How-To-Weld-Your-Bike rack event this past Saturday where Fisher (son, age 6) and I learned how to weld all the parts together using a tack-welder machine. Thanks Billy and Aaron (http://www.voigtmetal.com/about-the-artist)!

Step #5

I coated the finished rack with a metal patina so it won't totally rust and maintains a dark steel color. The final step will be securing the finished rack into the ground with a bag of concrete. Please come see my bike rack, along with all the others, this Friday (6PM to ?) at Kitchen Sink Studios, 828 North 3rd Street. You might even be able to win the bike in this photo (custom designed by Adam Mayo!). http://www.pedalcraftphx.com/.
Kitchen Sink Studios, Inc. has completed and launched a spectacular new online marketing site for Universal Technical Institute that brings its campuses to life for potential students.

The first of the newly launched campus tours can be viewed at www.utivirtualtours.com. The site was built with HTML5 technology that allows it to be viewed on both desktop and mobile devices (including iPhones and iPads), and includes a combination of cutting-edge 360-degree videos, videos of UTI instructors and students, and interactive use of still photography to bring the campus’ incredible facilities to life for prospective students.

The recreations tie in the company’s brand with the specific features of UTI campuses across the country through robust and immersive visuals. Everything will be able to be tracked and tied into social media campaigns and other marketing efforts.

Josh Prior, Chief Marketing Office for UTI in Phoenix, said the school was looking for ways to showcase its facilities at its 13 campuses across the country, and the solutions offered by Kitchen Sink provide a unique and interactive way of demonstrating the company’s capabilities in educating students.

“We wanted to take the way we represented our campuses to a different level through the use of technology,” he said.

Kitchen Sink is working on creating similar online experiences for the other campuses across the country, further helping UTI’s recruiting efforts. The Avondale campus is live now and the Phoenix MMI facility will be up and running in the next few weeks.
Kitchen Sink Studios, Inc. is pleased to have been featured in the Awwwards' latest book, "The best 365 websites around the world" for 2011.

The studio's web site has won more than 20 awards since its unveiling in August, but this is perhaps the most significant to date. The Awwwards recognized Kitchen Sink's site as the "Site of the Day" on December 25th, which resulted in a significant spike in site visits.

According to the Awwwards' web site, "Awwwards are the awards that recognize and promote the talent and effort of the best developers, designers and web agencies in the world. An international jury made up of some of the most important designers, bloggers and Internet agencies, will evaluate each site by means of a strict system of evaluation; scoring it on a scale of 1 to 10 for its Design, Creativity, Usability and Content. Our goal is to create a meeting point where web developers, designers and agencies across the world can share experiences, inspiration and knowledge: A community that bids for a more accessible, usable and beautiful Internet."

The Kitchen Sink site uses HTML5, CSS3 and jQuery technologies, which allow for the best search engine optimization as well as the ability to view it on all kinds of devices. Highly optimized CSS, streamlined navigation and heavy use of web fonts were just some of many approaches that went into the site.
Kitchen Sink Studios is pleased to have been profiled by the Phoenix Business Journal in the February 24, 2012 issue (PDF link here) for its use of technology in marketing and branding.

The article focused on work our team has done for clients such as Fox Restaurant Concepts, Universal Technical Institute, Macerich, SolarWing and many others. It profiled the studio's use of HTML5 web design, computer-generated renderings and animation and illustrative video presentations.

In the article, Josh Prior, Chief Marketing Officer for Universal Technical Institute, said that the company went to Kitchen Sink Studios for its online marketing needs because the studio offered advanced approaches that other web design firms couldn't match.

"We wanted to take that to a different level with technology," Prior said in the article.

Sandy Werthman, Chief Marketing Officer for Kitchen Sink client SolarWing, said that the studio's marketing tools "make my life a thousand times easier and cheaper."
The Kitchen Sink Studios team invites you to join us for First Friday on Friday, February 3. The festivities start at 6:30 p.m.!

We'll be featuring the art of Nicole Marie Smith in an exhibit called "Acts of Love and Other Misconceptions: Painting, Printmaking and Mixed Media by Nicole Marie Smith." Nicole provided this description of the exhibit:

The work that I have compiled for this show discusses the surreal nature of the "collective" perception of reality regarding love, life and relationships. It is a mockery of those perceptions and an attempt at seeking truth and clarity in the darkest moments of human emotion and experience. A differentiation between the performer and the performance. The Act of lifting the mask simply by acknowledging it.
Nicole Marie Smith is a local Phoenix artist and received her Bachelor's in Fine Art with a major in Printmaking from Arizona State University in 2004. She has temporarily taken a hiatus from printmaking but is currently working as a painter and mixed media artist. Her surrealist, figurative and metaphoric works are currently being displayed throughout the country. You can view more of her work at this link. She'll also be exhibiting on Third Friday at our studio's gallery from 6-9 p.m.

We'll also be featuring the music of local singer-songwriter Elizabeth McGovern.
Looking back upon a First Friday. I first think of the people that come into the space, in this case the Kitchen Sink Studios. Lots of them. Most of them i’d never seen before in my life. Young ones, old ones, happy ones, smiley ones, crazy ones. People dressed in black that act really grumpy and folks that just come in looking for free cheese.

You never know who might walk into the space to see your paintings and that’s the funny thing too. People never know what they are going to see when they go out for an evening of “ART” so I guess it’s a fair exchange. They just want to look at something, you just want to show them something. Even Steven.

For me, this last First Friday, the first of the new year was no different then most of the others i’ve involved myself with. Lots of people looking. Looking looking looking. It’s expected. You want people to come. That’s the point right?

Some of them want to talk to the Artist. Others want to talk about themselves. That happens more often than you might think. I don’t know exactly what to make of it. Even more wander in, look around, look around again. Get really close to the work, silently pour a glass of water or wine and drift into the night sky without a word. In all honestly those are the people I like best.

By and large the majority of folks that show up to see my work have always been positive and friendly. I get a small group of my collectors to my shows that come to see what new work I’ve done, or just to say hello.

As the Artist with the show you are pulled in a lot of directions all the time as people come and go. I always feel like I’m not spending enough time with any one person, as so many people are asking for your attention.

Folks often want to talk about my technique, the feeling, the color, their own art collection, what inspired me to do the work and many ask questions of a personal nature. People really seem to like to name drop too. I’ve noticed lots of that goes on. Most of the time I don’t know who they are talking about. I live a very insular life. I like it like that.

It happens fast. The night is over before you know it. There’s a later crowd that comes in, mainly the younger kids that are “makin’ the scene.”

I think people look forward to First Friday every month here no matter why they go, and that’s a good thing. The sense of community that it brings, even if they don’t think about it, it’s part of the experience. Being out there with the thousands that come over and over again adds to the success of, and is so important to our downtown world.

The fact that spaces like Kitchen Sink Studios open their doors to local artist to display their work is a great thing. Iapplaud them for doing this.

I’m glad it happens.
Tom Evanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14389124006037510938noreply@blogger.com0
